How not to build a Mk5! - buy a Radical...... Terrible thing this e-Bay, I have now acquired a Radical 1100 Clubsport. Pretty car, might even 'steal' bodywork for the Mk 5. Hawke single seater has (had) been running well this season - until I broke a driveshaft last weekend. Luckily a fellow competitor has suitable welding/fabrication facilities to repair the shaft. The original shaft was cut & shortened to accomodate the offset differential. The shaft had been drilled and tapped for a stud, then welded and a sleeve fitted over the weld which was then welded to the shaft. Considering the abuse I have given the shafts with tyre warming and numerous starts, I am surprised that the shafts lasted as long as they did. I had better get a spare pair made - just in case. Doug.

I know the feeling, I know own a formula ford chassis from the 70's and a VTR 1000 engine. In the process of modifying a Supra LSD for chain drive. Any pics of the radical? (love to see the rear with the skin off to get some ideas

Hi Mark, Saw your Supra diff on another forum! I have managed to take a couple of pics of the diff in the Radical. Looks like a good way to adjust the chain (no fiddly spacers). The bearing blocks slide in slots for the 8 mounting bolts and there are a pair of long bolts which bear on the front of the bearing blocks and these are used to tension the chain, then the 8 bolts are tightened. The diff used split sprockets so quick (relatively) ratio adjustments can be made. The diff in the Radical appears to be a Quaife ATB (Ford Fiesta) type. I will try & attach photos but this web browser is acting up with the forum reply editor! Still having problems with a different browser so will input directly:- .\ .\ Doug.

Oh well - that's another year over (nearly) and I have still not started on the chassis for the Mk5. I do have the plans pasted to the wall of my bedroom - hopefully to give me some inspiration. I have advertised my Hawke single seater, so if that goes there will be space for the Mk5 build (well there would have been if I hadn't taken another Hawke as part exchange on the Radical!). Still in two minds whether to go with the supercharged A-Series or with a bike motor - I suppose I could design the chassis to accept either, I just need to allow sufficient length in the engine bay for the bike transmission. My other 'bright idea' was to mount the A-Series motor forward of the rear axle line and take the drive from the gearbox outputs via chains and sprockets (one from each diff output). This would give better weight distribution and quick(er) final drive ratio changes could be made by altering the sprocket sizes. The differential could be in the mini gearbox or could be a chain driven version on the rear axle and use a locked diff in the engine. Unfortunately Santa did not bring me any nice Mini bits for Xmas - his elves cannot have seen the new MiniSport 7 port heads yet ;D Wishing all the Terrapin forum members a happy & prosperous New Year, Doug.

Well, I now have one less excuse for not building the Mk5 - I just took delivery of a plasma cutter. What a great piece of kit No more sore elbows from hacksawing. I have only tried cutting a few pieces of scrap so far but I am really impressed. Cut alloy sheet as easily as scribing a line. Quickly chopped up 1/8" steel box section and plate. My plasma cutter has an in-built compressor therefore just needs plugged into a 230V single phase supply, it is also very portable - only downside - nothing comes cheap (but thank goodness for e-Bay)

Still not found time to start the Mk5 build I finally got round to starting my own engineering, fabrication & welding business and this is taking up a fair bit of time. www.westgarage.co.ukI am currently building a covered race car transporter for my friend who recently bought my Radical Clubsport. I have also been making a couple of mini based chain drive differentials for bike engined cars.... advert over..... ;D The rest of my time seems to be taken up fixing the Hawke race car - had a bit of brain fade last Saturday and came off the Fintray hillclimb course at the aptly named "ruin" corner. The front aerofoils have been repaired, I've ordered lots of new rod ends and bolts, and have started to fabricate a new front upper wishbone. My little excursion can be seen on my web site as I had my onboard video camera fitted. www.westhouse.plus.com/movies.htmDoug.

Another season (and year) has passed without much progress (and a lot of diversions). First diversion was an Austin Seven special (which is currently stitting in the back of my transporter). Next diversion was one of Ian Scott's Megapin chassis - (a honeycomb aluminium tub, in fact the tub of the Megapin which is shown in one of the earlier posts in this thread). Final? diversion was a spaceframed Mini which I intend to give the 'Terrapin' treatment. The Mini consists of a Domino HT race shell and a roll cage - the previous owner was going to fit a Suzuki Swift twin-cam in the front but I'm going to fit a mid-mounted bike engine and "Terrapin" Mini suspension. I saw a similar car, at Croft this year, which seemed like a good idea. The Terrapin-mini will be strictly for the track and will run in Sports Libre in the hillclimbs and sprints. This season the class has had a couple of Z-car minis and a one off Mini pick-up with mid mounted Honda bike engine. The Terrapin-mini may not be as quick as the Radical Clubsports which dominate the small sports libre class (in Scotland) but should give them a run-for-their-money on the short twisty tracks. I better go and dust off those plans for the Terrapin and start fabrication....

Hey Doug....
Somewhat I can relate with the distractions ;D First it was the Civic, now the Locost...
I really like the Mini/Terrapin/motorcycle engine idea...Do you have any more pictures of the one you posted earlier ?
It may not be the fastest, but it sure would be cool...Looking forward to your progress...
Keep us posted and please plenty of pics...

Hi Miniciti,
Can't help noticing you're local to me , and wondered if you had any thoughts on the body for your Mk5?
I mention it as I have listed some Chevron panels in the for sale section which I had planned to use for a Mk5 style car, which I just don't have the time to do at the moment.
I'm just south of Edinburgh, if you are interested.
Cheers,
Al

If you just want rid of the old panels I can come and collect them.... .....and then lie in my pile of un-started projects Doug.
