I am looking to buy a complete/incomplete car or parts. Must be Mini powered. I have wanted to start building my own Terrapin. I have all the drawings etc but circumstances have changed so would prefer to purchase a completed car or chassis. I have all the Mini mechanicals. I am in New Zealand so would prefer it if I could source one locally either here or Australia to keep freight cost down. I have heard there may be one in the lower South Is which is damaged. If it was for sale, it may be ideal. Any help or sellers? Thanks in advance and a big thank you to Mark in Christchurch for his help with technical info. Geoff

Happily now the owner of Chassis number 71 thanks to Donald of Southland. Looking forward to it arriving here and my first event.

Sorry for the delay in replying. I still have not been down to Dunedin to collect the car. It was built in the late 90's by Donald Conway. According to the logbook, it was used in a couple of Bluff hilclimbs and competed twice in the Southern Festival of Speed. Donald told me he hasn't used it for the last 4 or so years. He still competes in hillclimbs etc but uses either one of his Minis or a Nissan. The car is true to the Mark One plans apart from using a larger, unmodified 1275 power plant. Still retains drum brakes and 10 inch wheels. The car comes with a mould for making the nose cone. Geoff

Interesting. I was not aware of that car's existence. Cars in NZ I know of:- Gray Richards (the blue car on this homepage) Darryl Seymour Wanganui Robert Stephenson Stu Borland Dunedin ? an Opthalmologist or similar from Canterbury. This car may/may not still exist-it was involved in a very big crash at Southern Festival of Speed several years ago. Lyn Hatton? Blenheim. I have heard he bought his old car back many years ago. Errol Norris Christchurch. Car never completed. Kingsley Sievright Havelock North. Car never completed. Have I missed any? Your car

My car is true to the Mark 1 plans, still even running drum brakes. As I am a long way from a circuit, it may be limited to hill climbs and street sprints. Pukekohe is 230km away and is known as a mini killer due to the long back straight. Just sit there at maximum revs and wait for the hairpin to arrive. Perhaps the new chicane might help. Hampton Downs is a hard track on brakes, so the drums may not be up to scratch. I have no intention of butchering the car in the interest of speed. I just want to enjoy it the way it is. I understand Ross Cameron of Dunedin also has one. He is a car dealer who also races in NZV8s among other things. I was told this when I collected the car last week from Dunedin. I was also told this was the car that had the big shunt at the Southern Festival of Speed, not the ChCh car. The chap who told me this seemed to know a lot of what went on in the area, but also had no knowledge of my car. It did run twice in the Southern Festival of Speed. Mark Elder built and still runs Chassis 72 (Red) in Christchurch. I saw him running it at the Skope Classic at Ruapuna in February. It is a Mk1 and is superbly presented. Do you know where the car that was built in here Whangarei by, I think Brian Mason has gone? Is it the Gray Richards car? I heard there was a car in Blenheim, possibly owned by Lyn Hatton. He was racing a Nissan at the Skope Classic but I didn't get a chance to talk to him. I wrote to the local car club, but got no reply. The way I see it there are Mk 1 Ross Cameron Mk 1 Chas 18 Blue 48 Darryl Seymour Mk 1 Robert Stephenson? Mk 1 Chas 8 Blue 42 Gray Richards Mk 1 Chas 70 Red 83 Stu Borland Mk 1 Chas 71 Yellow myself Mk 1 Chas 72 Red 72 Mark elder You may know of it, but I read some info on the following web site www.theroaringseason.com/showthread.php?72-Lost-Race-Cars/page10

Hmmm interesting thread check out my posting on the general board re "this site quiet" some one who knows my car "very well" seems to be misinformed as to what is really going on! Ross camerons car has not turned a wheel in anger for a number of years so it wasnt at the SFOS. I parked mine up for a few years after an "incident" at Levels with a formula ford but have since got it out and did Waimate at Labor weekend 2012. At the same meeting at levels, the same fford almost took out Don in the yellow car after being black flagged for his dodgy pass on me! below is alink to mark elders crash in his at the Skope meeting www.sportpromedia.com/events/2009_10/100207_Ruapuna/Maxwell/Elder/index.htmthis is link to me at Waimate 2012 www.stuff.co.nz/timaru-herald/news/7848944/Waimate-50-has-streets-roaringi dont know who valour1 is and i havent been to a meeting where gray's car is at the same time so i dont know where this misinformation is coming from. the opthalmologist in chc is Mark elder. There is also another car being built in cromwell but dont know details as to how far on it is in the build. i hope this puts the record straight on some things. gimmeabear...ring me sometime stu

Thanks for the 'real facts'. I have heard stories in all directions, about all sorts of cars and figured if I mentioned a couple, the truth would surface. When I saw Mark elders car, I was impressed with the presentation and had a suspicion it may have been rebuilt recently. Geoff

I suspect Gray Richard's car was the ex Mason car. Gray's car was certainly built in Whangarei (or at least started there) and it went to Wellington from where Gray purchased it. Gray was living in Blenheim at the time and the car spent a few years there and competed in the South Island. He moved to Napier about 4 years ago. There may have been another Terrapin in Hawkes Bay. Years ago I found a right front corner off a Terrapin at our local rubbish dump.
