Hi folks, just to introduce myself, my name is gary and I stay way up north in the north east of Scotland. I have just got a copy of HSLC and a set of plans , currently reading , digesting and planning. I was raised on minis my first ever one JSA152F was red ... well ok it was so faded it was pink... arghhh, not for long though as I soon became a mini sport enthusiast and my parents discovered the joy of mini engine features in the garden. At present I am just finishing a Haynes roadster with a mk2.5 1.8 mx5 and eaton m45 supercharger and once done the build table will be out for my terrapin. first things first is to sit down with the blue book regs and see what class I am going to target as this will determine the engine choice. I would rather stay away from bike engines, nowt personal to anyone with them , it just aint my thing. Anyways once I get started I will do a build thread as I go, I really am looking forward to being part of the forum, the build and to competing, Regards for now Gary

Hi Gary and welcome. The MSA (blue Book) does not define 'classes' only 'categories'. Classes are determined by the event and championship organisers. In Scotland for Sprints & Hillclimbs, the category for a single seater Terrapin is 'Racing Cars' www.scottish-hillclimbing.co.uk/2015_regs.pdfThe Scottish classes are: C4 Racing Cars up to 1100cc C5 Racing Cars over 1100cc and up to 1600cc C6 Racing Cars over 1600cc Unfortunately Mini engines would put you in C4 or C5 which are dominated by bike engined single seaters. The only way to complete would be to go the bike engined route. I would stick to a tried and tested route of fitting a GSXR1000 (weapon of choice in the sub 1100 class). Aim for a sub. 300Kg build and 180bhp should make a competitive car. In class C4 there are a variety of single seaters from converted Formula Fords, OMS, Jedi and an extremely lightweight Saxon PCD. Hope to see you out at some events in the future. Doug.

hi Doug, thanks for clarifying, the classes yeah it does look like the only "sensible" option is going to be the gixer as you suggest. I guess that is one thing decided now Thanks again Gary

Hi Gary, Current project car is a Royale RP29 converted to a YZF-R1 engine - not quite finished yet (It has only been about 7 years since I started the conversion). Unfortunately I won't be at the Golspie event this year. That weekend, I will be trying out a new proposed sprint venue at Lochgelly in my Austin Seven Special. If you need any information on bike engine conversions or chain drive LSDs, I have done a few. If you go to Golspie, look out for Russell Macfarlane's Nemesis single seater, I fitted the GSXR1000 K7 in that one. www.mscc.org.uk/wp-content/gallery/racing-cars-june-2015/62-Russell-Macfarlane-Nemesis-DSC01664.jpg

Thanks Rob, after speaking with Doug, he clarified the classes it seems it will be a bike engine / box to be competitive. So finishing off my Haynes roadster ( mx5 1.8 with eaton m45 supercharger) then hoping to start over the winter. I have been doing the research and making a list of parts to get and a steel shopping list. Regards Gary
