Hi all,
Not been around on here for a while but keep coming back to the idea of building a car - think I just need to get started and get it out of my system.
I keep bouncing between a Locost and a Terrapin, but think the latter is probably the better considered design for a track car.
Plan would be to build something that could be used on track days and eventually for hillclimbs/sprints. Im severely torn between a bike engined single seater or the mk5 2 seat version - there's a mk5 build with mini bodywork that looks fantastic in my view and a great basis for a track car as well as clearly good for competition.
Are plans still available at all?
I have an old copy of the book I picked up at an auto jumble is spanking new condition a few years ago, which has been sat on my shelves for some time, along with Allan's other books (Competition Car Suspension and Race and Rally Car Source Book). I'm a big fan in particular of things like the string computer to allow a good degree of consideration and accuracy in design without the need for fancy software (or the training to use it).
Steve

I Steve, I'm beginning my single seater Terrapin bike engined build at the moment. One thing you may need to cinsider and research is that many tracks now don't allow single seaters on track days. Ask your favoured tracks whether it is still allowed and or they considering a change. String computer is a great idea, but now there is a free geometry calculating site i found at www.vsusp.com Give it a look, much quicker than the string computer (as great as it is). Rod

Cheers rod, I'll have a look at that link - I've seen a few things on websites before but as I generally use an iPad they don't work quite so well, so a quiet lunchtime on the work laptop will be needed! The single seater restrictions are the reason I'm leaning more toward the mk5 version, with sports racer bodywork to get passed the trackday restrictions. It would be no different to running a radical in that respect.

Hey Thanks This is really good. Although putting in the Terrapin info. it shows the roll centre quite differently to the string computer! It almost looks as if it should be the centre of gravity? I must be doing something wrong. Is there something similar for shocks & spring rates? Regards Sean

I have view the forum for years, but after missing out on the opportunity to buy Stu Borland's Terrapin (NZ) the time has come to build a car. Years ago I raced in the NZ Sports Champs using a series of U2s, but what got me started was seeing a MK5 Terrapin Sports Racing at the tender age of 14, in a car dealer's yard In Palmerston North. My early days in the U2s were spent chasing a rapid Mini powered sports racer. Now in my twilight years I want to build a car from scratch, as running the U2s was basically a question of constantly fixing previous setups, half done jobs, etc. the usual story.
Would you be able to advice availability of plans for both the single seater and the MK5 Sports Car, cost and shipping arrangements, etc. I already have a copy of Allan Staniforth's Low Cost High Speed.
Kind regards.
Eugene Boyle AKA MadPaddy.

i lived in NZ for the best part of 30 years, but my wife got the job to die for in Melbourne, OZ. Now we in Brisbane and she does the FIFO thing as she is now running her own consultancy business. As I said I just missed out on buying Stu's MK1, which is also now in Brisbane. Not sure if the guy is using it or not. It would be great if you could help out with the MK 1 plans.
My e-mail address is eugenecboyle@gmail.com.
Thanks for getting touch.
Kind regards. Eugene
