Hi Is there a preferred location for the solenoid? By the starter/ motor or by the kill switch? Mini's have the thick feed wire from the battery to the solenoid by the motor/ starter. Mine has the solenoid by the kill switch with ordinary wires back to the starter which doesn't seem right.

If you want reliability, fit an Isuzu/Holden Gemini/Jackaroo/Rodeo starter. Hitachi model s114-271 circa '78 - '85. Bolts pretty much straight in. Much easier on the ring gear and draws less power. The pinion doesn't spin until it's engaged, unlike the Lucas which is spinning as it contacts the ring gear. If you stick with the original Lucas, the solenoid normally mounts on the two bolt holes on the bell housing adjacent to the matching ones where the clutch slave cylinder mounts. Originally, before fitting the modern starter, I had mine mounted on the firewall behind the seat. This gave a very short cable to the starter. Wherever it is, must be on a good earthing metal base. Cheers Geoff
