Well, I got a set of plans for both the Mk1 and Mk V back when I lived in California. When I moved out to cold, dark Michigan, the plans were (of course) lost- and I think I finally found Staniforths phone # last night- Going to call on Monday to get another set of plans and try to get started.
My intent at this point is to use a slightly modified MkV (a so-called lard-butt-pin, if the moderator will excuse my coarsness) set up for D/SR. After moving here, I got the plans for a LeGrande Mk18, but with motorbike power a bit too modern form my taste.
I'm finding the D/SR is popular here- don't think the terrapin is particularly competitive, but I'm guessing, like all club racers, it's a matter of seat time.
More latter, I hope

Hi, After reading HSLC I am also thinking of building a Mk5 sports racer for hillclimbs & sprints. In Scotland we have a 'Sports Libre' class for up to 1400cc cars (fine for a 1380 Mini engined racer). Unfortunately the class is likely to attract Suzuki Hyabusa engined Radicals I did run a Mini powered single seater for a couple of seasons - a bit of a lash-up - it had a complete Mini subframe grafted onto the rear of an old FF1600 chassis (similar set up to a Landar R6). Good fun but not competitive against the bike engined cars. I regret to say I have now fitted a Kawasaki engine to the single seater. Look forward to seeing progress on your Terrapin build. Doug.

I'll probably set the car up to comply w/ design rules for D/SR, and leave actual engine selection until later. While I like automotive engines better, it's tough to compete with a 200 horse engine that weighs 250 lbs including transmission.
Maybe back to the Gould-Terrapin concept with interchangeable back halves- one for modern and one for vintage. (I'm an old vintage racer running an MGB in E/Production on the west coast, prior to 'The Big Move'. Still have the car out in the barn.)

Yes, the Gould removable rear is something I have in mind if I build a larger (V6, V8) rear engined project. Nice to see some more members posting - Good to see Doug here - I'm after a mini shell for my daughter who wants to go on the mini run to Italy! Keeps me busy!

Rob, I'm sure that your daughter will enjoy a trip to Italy on the 'Italian Job' - and I'm even more certain that you would also - it's great fun (I can say that as I have done the 'Job' six times). I would certainly recommend building a classic Mini for the trip - last year I did the trip in one of those new fangled retro BMW MINI Cooper S things - no fun at all! - never broke down, didn't use 2 gallons of oil and could just about hold its own on the German autobaans (chickened out at 210kph).... Doug.

I assume for the FSAE event? When I spoke to Allan when I first got the plans, he indicated the late Caroll Smith had got him involved in this a couple years back.
Guess I'm going to need to call him now that my bluff is being called! and get that replacement set of plans in the mail so I can at least have some steel tubing laying on the floor of the barn!
I'm still unloading from the move in October, found my copy of the reprint of HSLC- going to read up tonight to see what I can parts I'd need from a Mini (as I'm an MG guy).
One potential problem I have with the existing plans is that current SCCA GCR's require a 1.375 diameter tubing for the roll cage, so some changes will need to happen.
Still thinking D/SR so there's some place to run the car locally.

Well it's about time. I actually pulled the money for the plans out of the bank on Monday last week, but it took me until the weekend to get it posted. (It's so tough to address an envelope and lick a stamp.)
Want to spend this weekend working on the MG so that when the plans arrive I can start looking at them to change tube sizes to comply w/ D/SR.
Then need to figure out how to move lengths of tubing home and dig up the old Victor torch. Need to find some Ox and Acetylene jars....
