Posting is pretty slow at the moment, lets hope it's due to Easter Holidays? Or is it because the season is starting - I see Mr Staniforth set a respectable time last week I'm 75% the way through a full workshop & garage re-organisation in prep for finalising the Terrapin cosmetics - I had no room to work on the March 783 wrap round nose I have during the god awful wet weather we have here in the UK this week I see Doug has been posting - he made me feel really good when he admited to taking 17 years on his Hawke (If you havent visited Doug's website I would recommend you do, he posts some really excellent stuff) I have been doing the Terrapin part time for over 2 years now ( I've decided I have too much to do at home and need to give up work, just can't persuade them to keep paying me ) Just when I was getting settled into a steady pattern of work on the Terrapin over the last few weeks I find I'm off to Holland next week and I have a big project ramping up - Ah well, it pays the bills

Strange as it may seem Rob but i was thinking of exactly the same thing. I am busy trying to juggle things here so that we have four cars at Timaru on the 30th of April. I will send you some pics as to what happened. Melbourne GP was an eye opener!!! F1 speed absolutely astounding.
Has anyone tried these cheap UHF radios for talking back to the pits etc? We got some for the daughter for xmas and the have a voice operated setting so will try it out. They are cheap enough to mod for a push to talk switch on the wheel. Rob i must catch up with you on the side! cheers Stu

Stu, glad to see your Melbourne trip was a success (I do find all those licra clad girls very distracting when you're trying to concentrate on the cars!) Radios - in the UK there are several types available now and the ranges are getting better (2km+) and the prices are dropping rapidly - less than £50 a pair in some places here. No knowledge of which are best buys etc. Needs some research. Catch up with you soon Rob

I'm afraid the Terrapin has had to take a back seat while I finish the Metro ready for the 17th at Three Sisters. The Metty gets it MOT tomorrow (I HOPE) so back onto the Terrapin in the next few days (have lots of parts for the engine arriving over the next few days)
EDIT Speaking of which, just had a nice new lightweight Ali oil cooler delivered ;D

Good work Mark. Coincidentally, I did the engine/box/diff first and had it all sitting under the scaffolding platform whilst the chassis was built - takes a lot of pressure off later on.

I'm also guilty of neglecting my Terrapin project in order to prepare the Focus for a two day road-racing school this weekend, and a Solosprint/Autoslalom demonstration for the 16th of April...
Work should get back to normal after that since I have a one month break between events this season. I have cut down my racing season to only 5-7 events this year to concentrate on my project, compared to the 14 events of last year.

Hi all, This is turning into a bit of a confessional... For my sins, I have been re-building my friend's Hawke down in Derby. We replaced the clutch, fitted a new chain, welded the manifolds, straightened the nose box, fitted new front aerofoils and fibreglassed over the cracks in the nosecone....not a bad weekends work ;D I also took the opportunity to pick up my race wheels, fitted with new Avon A40 slicks, from BMTR. (Boy are they sticky!) This week I will need to fit my new smaller front sprocket and softer rear springs to my Hawke. The first sprint at Kames is on the 23rd. I even remembered to take my race suit to the dry cleaners today and my new helmet arrived last week....I'm sure I will have forgotten something...Oh yes - posted the entries today Doug

Hi All, I presume that this weeks lack of postings is due to everyone being out in the garage/workshop fabricating their Terrapins Doug

I am, as we speak, cleaning and starting work on my cylinder haed ;D Hi Mark, Good for you! (note: Scots spelling should be cylinder 'heid'!) I have had a frustrating week, I went to put a coat of paint onto the repaired nosecone for my friends Hawke and there was a nasty reaction with a layer of paint, so I had to strip the paint back to the gel coat. The rest of this weekend will be taken up with getting my Hawke prepared for my first sprint of the season, next Saturday. Doug.

Got back from NL on Thursday night, been furiously tidying workshop to make room - Mark, my spare engines all have inertia starter motors - your welcome if needed. I think you may want a pre-ingaged type for your engine?
Some good news, Allan & I are thinking of getting 100 more copies of HSLC printed. There will be a slight difference as Allan wants to replace his photo in the book. Keep you all posted. These must be potential collectors items of the future as no batch of 100 (this wll be 3rd) has been alike: *Sept 2003 - spelling mistakes on card insert at rear - both mine and Allan's names? (1st batch of 100) - these were all autographed by Allan also - over tea & cakes at a north west motorway service station ;D *Jan 2004 - spelling mistakes corrected (2nd batch of 100) *May 2005 (hopefully?) - 3rd batch of 100 will have new A.S. photo

.... Mark, my spare engines all have inertia starter motors - your welcome if needed. I think you may want a pre-ingaged type for your engine?..... Mark, It is possible to use the earlier flywheel and clutch on the A+ engines. These are a lot lighter/cheaper than the later Verto clutch. You would then be able to run the bendix type starter (again a lot cheaper). Alternatively the early A+ Mini with Verto did use the early style ring gear and bendix type starter - but might be difficult to find. By using the early clutch you get a good choice of competition plates and diagphrams and also lightweight flywheels and backplates. Doug.

Cheers, Yes I have seen a lot of people converting from verto to pre-verto. What exactly is required to do this? Why did BL convert over to the verto?? Cheers Mark

Bit of a grey area for me too Doug (used to know the "every which way" for Fords in my day - mexico, rs2000 - hydraulic/cable, plates and covers options etc.etc. - helps having Ian Harwood down the road) I'd love an overview on the points to watch on transfer housings, clutches, flywheels etc for the A/A+ range? The workshop manuals only tell you so much. cheers Rob PS: Rover - what a farce
