I have just joined, having been overcome by all of my lunch hours spent pouring over Allan's "Race & Rally Car Sourcebook". My name is Bob..I'm 63-a retired network eng. and in my other life was a cylinder head developer and fabricator, metal & composite, for an IMSA GTU and then Camel Light Prototype team of the old American IMSA series, (a paradise of fast cars and famous drivers).
My best friend and I were deeply saddened to hear of Allan's passing as news doesn't travel well across the pond unless you know where to look. Needless to say, having never experienced the privelege of meeting Mr. Staniforth, we still considered him a guide and mentor as the message in the pages of his book can be life changing. With just a few tools, perserverance, a small dose of self-discipline and the motivation to get up from in front of the mindless television, Allan showed us how to not just wish we could race, but how to race...and do it in a car we could build ourselves.
What an example to leave for us to follow. As a new member, I am trying to find out how to obtain the Terrapin plans, as I have just purchased a copy of "High Speed, Low Cost" today. I would be most grateful if someone could inform me as to the current status of plans availability. I plan on starting right after the new year and finishing up by first of the summer.
Due to my previous brush with racing in the old IMSA series, I spent all of my vacation and bonuses on machine tool and welding equipment and currently have in my small home garage a Vert. Mill, 14x40 lathe, Superflow Flow bench, mig tig and gas welding equip. I would like to build a car that Allan would nod his approval at as I would consider that one of the greatest compliments one could ever receive. I plan on doing a very thoughtful & well documented build and hope that I can be of service to anyone else following in Allan's footsteps.
