I am a regular visitor to this site (not always logged in) and I was discussing Terrapins at my mini mechanics Chrsitmas dinner last night. I asked a number of hillclimb and sprint drivers there if any of them knew how many, if any Terrapins are in Australia. No one knew the answer. I did a search on this site but didn't come up with anything. If there are any in my State of Victoria I would be very interested to see one in action. I have Allans book and would love to build one but unfortunately I don't have the skills or a trade and at the moment the money either. My daily driver, a '68 Morris Cooper S has now been in the garage for over a year while I built a new house and I desperately want to get that back on the road first and as soon as possible. A terrapin would be a dream car later on and I would be most interested in a mini engined Terrapin. I am 48 so have a bit of time to do this one day I hope. Anyway, back to the question, are there any/many Terrapins in Australia?

Hi flute Im from Sydney, I built a Terrapin a few years ago ( its the yellow one at the top of the page). I sold it to a guy in Queensland but don't know weather he is competing or not. When I was building it there were 2 others i knew of, 1 belonged to a guy who lived in Peakhurst and the other was in Cootamundra. at the time of my build I was contacted by a few people who said they were planing on building one but i don't know if any got finnished, some were in Victoria. I am getting the building bug again and considering building another one this time the mk5 2 seater. Cheers Wayne

Thanks Wayne, I suppose at the moment I fall in to the 'tyre kicker' category however I do love these cars and I am keen to keep an eye out for any competing. I am doing a 68 Morris Cooper S resto at the moment but down the track I would love to get more involved in motor sport than just waving the flags at the historics. Thanks for the reply and I hope you start another one. Regards, Jim.

Sounds like there will be another one with 'carnut' planning one up north. It sounds like the type I would like too with a mini engine. I hope we see some pics of your project soon. Cheers.

It will be a few months away yet, before I start on the Terrapin build. I to am restoring a Mini Cooper S, it's a Dec 1967 model. Complete resto, zinc plating every nut bolt and rivet - starting to get sick of plating everything, but I am nearly finished. I am also doing the research, some design changes and gathering parts for when I do start the physical build on the Terrapin. I had a spare Cooper S engine /gearbox unit that helps a lot. A mate of mine is also looking at building one also. Good luck with your Cooper S, and good luck also on the possible Terrapin build.

Thanks for the update. I do hope you can post a build thread on here with pics as you go. It would be very interesting. I would love to see some pictures of your mini also but perhaps that is for another forum. Cheers.

I am the one from Peakhurst with the Terrapin. It's an A series, later chassis with flat sides.
I had heaps of fun in it for 10 years then had a suspension failure.
It has been pulled apart for the last 7 years though I intend to get it back on the track one day soon. Probably Wakefield but I may make it to Winton one day.
We also have a guy who sometimes comes to our track days with a Terrapin with Toyota twin cam in it. It's pretty fast.
Love hearing of other Aussies with Terrapins.
Pete

Pete,
Have you got any pics of your Terrapin you can share on the site? Pics in its former glory or even current snaps. I love seeing pics of all the different designs of Terrapins, and all the historic nostalgia and all. Do you know what year it was built?
Cheers, Carnut

It's been a while since I have visited the Forum. Have attached a couple of photos of the Terrapin with Toyota engine. I'm sure the owner won't mind me putting them up here. Pete

Has been off the track since 2005. This might inspire me to get cracking on it. Pete Attachments:
