HI I am looking at the harness attachments for the eyebolts. The normal fixing via the FIA requirement a 20mm tube welded into the frame for the eyebolt. With the frame being 25mm square section there isn't much left with this arrangement and it seems to be for a 38mm Ø tube. There are also the Harness bolt plates, but again these seem to be for cars, not space frames. I am wondering how other people have achieved suitable fixing points for the racing harness to meet the scrutineers satisfaction. I have the space frame only at this time. Look forward to comments & advice. Regards Sean

Hi Sean, Welcome to the forum. You don't say which country you are from - I'm sure there are various standards (other than FIA) depending on which country you are competing. In the UK the MSA Yearbook "Blue Book" gives some guidance. The Harness Bars you are referring to are really for roll cages rather than spaceframes or chassis. (K 1.3.9) Tubes welded through 25mm square section chassis members are used on many single seaters. You do need to watch the direction of pull on the harness plates so that the (7/16" UNF or M12) fixing bolt is in shear. Other installations I see use a transverse bolt through the eye of the webbing with each end of the bolt supported by a bracket which is welded or bolted to the chassis. It is also important that you follow the belt manufacturer's installation instructions, especially if you are required to use a Frontal Head Restraint (FHR) such as a HANS device. Schroth publish a good set of instructions. Schroth Harness Installation Instructions

Thanks for reply I am from NZ and our MANZ follows FIA. Putting a 20mmØ tube through a 25mm square section doesn't leave much of the original section and would rely on the welding to maintain the structure. Just getting my head around it. It must be ok & work if this is normal practice. Regards Sean

Attached (hopefully) are the pictures of my belt pickup points. These are brazed in/on and have full certification by MotorSport New Zealand. Although there appears to minimal room for the sleeve to be inserted into 25mm square, it is still very strong. Good luck. Geoff Whangarei NZ

Hi Geoff Thanks for the pics. Very similar to Gray's. I caught up with him In Dec for the Taupo meet and it was great to see him out there with the Formula Juniors. Also sounds as if the Whangarei Hill climb went well. Hope to meet you at some stage & look forward to more Terrapins on the Track. Regards Sean, Taupo.
