Hi all, I have now received my plans for the MK5 ;D. My main area of concern is the availability of tyres in 10" sizes. The rear rims are designed to be 8" wide but I am not sure what racing rubber is available in this size. As I want the finished car to be "historic" looking I would prefer to use the 10" wheels but if rubber was not available........... No plans to start building till next year as I have an old 500cc car to finish off first. I have however bought some balsa to get me familiar with the chassis layout. All I need now is the time and the money .

Hi, Avon appear to still make 8.5x16x10" tyres (suspect that they may be the size for the front of the 6 wheeled Tyrrell GP cars), but very expensive (BMTR show at UKP 156 for a slick). Also Hoosier make 6 and 7.5 inch wide, 10" tyres (in either 18 or 19.5" profiles). Hoosier's R25A compond is a nice soft compound which I have used (in 13" sizes) for sprints & hillclimbs. Doug.

Hoosier do two 8" tyres for 10in rims. 43105 is a 18.0 x 7.5-10 and 43120 is a 19.5 x 7.5-10. Both are available in R25A compound. Mike

Thanks for the information. I will continue with the idea of using 10" wheels for the time being. I will start to look aroung for some mini uprights/hubs. MiNiTiCi - I might even see you next season as I intend to dig out the old Austin 7 and do some hills and maybe a couple of circuit races down south.

If you fancy bringing your Austin Seven to Scotland, I can recommend the Forrestburn Hillclimbs run by Monklands Sporting Car Club www.mscc.org.ukThey are a friendly bunch and usually attract a good field of pre & post war & thoroughbred cars as well as more modern machinery. Doug.

Hi Doug. I am already in Scotland and a member of the Monklands Sporting Car Club !!!! I live in Bo'ness and at one time held the record for the prewar class at Forrestburn; quicker than Brian Hopkins Fraser Nash ;D I have the little red wasp tailed Austin 7 single seater. I am building up a 500cc car (1950's) but that is only to fund other projects. I intend to get the 500 finished before I make a proper start on the Terrapin. I was trying to get my head around what wheels to use as this to me is quite fundamental to the whole build. I can now start looking for wheels, drum brakes, hubs etc and also make up the jigs for the wishbones. Will probably bump into you sometime next season. Steve

Doh! - Now I recall the very pretty Seven special! I can probably see your house from here - just across the Forth nr Dunfermline. Now I will have to get-my-finger-out and start on my own Mk5 build.... I don't think that my Hawke can go much faster as it is a bit on the lardy side (~400Kg). This would not be such a problem in sports libre (I recon a bike engined Mk5 could be made to run around 300Kg). Hope to see you out next season or at least at some of Forrestburn's fun nights. Doug.

Hi Doug.I have the little red wasp tailed Austin 7 single seater. Steve Hi Steve, Now sold the Hawke and have bought a 1937 Austin Seven Special (in pieces). May need to pick your brain on a few performance mods. The car has a later Reliant 750cc OHV motor and came with a rather horrid 1950's fibreglass body. I quite fancy trying to fabricate an alloy single seater style body. Doug.

Hi Doug, I don't have much experience of the OHV Reliant engine although I do have something in one of my books. If you want you can contact me during the day on 0131 248 1474 or in the evening (if you can get me in !!) on 01506 828 448. I am at present porting another Austin 7 block as the one in the car is showing signs of rusting through the bore. I don't seem to have much time at the moment to progress with the Terrapin but I am still keeping a look out for a pair of drum braked mini hubs and then I will start on the wishbones. All the best with the Austin project. Steve

Hi Steve, I think I could help out with a pair of Mini front drum braked hubs. I'm sure there are some in the back of the garage. For my A7, I was thinking of making a lowered independent front suspension, I've seen a few pictures of similar on the web. As for the Reliant engine - I'm pretty sure the supercharger lying on the hearth would make it lively enough ;D Next problem will be wider wire wheels and vintage racing pattern tyres. What sizes of rims and tyres does your A7 single seater use? Doug.

Hi Doug, I am using 15" wheels as they were the smallest diameter that you could use in Vintage Sports Car Club meetings (now would need 16" but good tyres for this size are difficuilt to get). The fronts are 4" wide and the rear 4.5" wide shod with Dunlop R5 crossply. Looks the part but very expensive. Better going down the 750 club racers route and using Firestone F560 in sizes from 120 to 150. A7's have run on all sizes from 19" down to 10" on the late 750 formula cars. I am interested in the mini hubs so please get in touch sometime. Regards, Steve

Hi Steve, I've had a look in the garage and found six drum braked front hubs, all need a good overhaul, some have drums still fitted (er - probably due to being seized on ). I also have driveshafts and CV's for these hubs. I'll give you a call to arrange delivery/pick-up. Re. the tyres and wheels for the A7 - I had a look at some prices for the Dunlop R5's - no worse than a set of slicks for the single seater (ie. pretty expensive as you say) - but should last considerably longer than super soft Avon slicks with 150 bhp ;D I did see that someone was manufacturing replica Speedex alloy A7 wheels, fine if I re-use the Hamblin shell but would probably not look right on a period style alloy bodied single seater A7. Any sources for wide A7 competion wire wheels? Doug.

Hi Doug, for wider wheels I would give these two a phone; Keith Rawson (his uncle Don started the business and was 750 class champion into his 70's) on Work Phone 01691 661 440 or Tim Myall at Pigsty racing on 01342 870 988 A friend of mine, John Johnstone, bought an immaculate Hamblin Cadet and is up in Strathdon in Aberdeenshire and I sold a Hamblin body on ebay last year. Look forward to the call about the mini front hubs. Regards, Steve
