Gilbert, Sorry to hear that you have got suntanned eyeyballs - very painful. I have had a couple of 'flashes' in the past. It is all too easy to not use the helmet when tacking up something in a difficult position. If I do more than a couple of quick tacks without my helmet, I get a sunburnt face. When I watch American Chopper I am always amazed that they hardly ever wear a helmet when tacking up. Get well soon! - Doug.

Thanks for the concern Douglas. I'm starting to worry a bit because the pain now is nearly gone but I still have very dizzy sight in my right eye !! I hope I haven't damaged my (plastic !) lense.Had severe glucome a few years ago so the "real stuff" was replaced by plastic units !!

Hello guys, I've made a quick sketch (a one eyed one ;D) from the upright I've fabricated. I would like to hear your opinions about what method I should use to mount the swivel joint (rose joint) to the upright. Should I weld a nut to the plate (top of the drawing) or should I weld a bolt through the plate (bottom of drawing) to mount the rose joint. I see advantages in both ways. Thanks !! Attachments:

I think the nut welded to the inside of the plate would be better as welding a bolt/stud may seriously affect the properties of the bolt.
A longer threaded bush welded to the inside of the plate may be better (and could be tapped after welding).

thanks for the reply Douglas, sounds logic. Next question of course is how to "secure" the bolt.Is it just inserted with Loctite ? Don't want that bolt to unscrew itself "in flight" ;D

Some form of positive locking would be advisable! How about fabricating a steel box around the rod end so that the fixing is in 'double shear' and use a lock washer under the bolt head. Attachments:

Thanks Douglas, that seems a very clever and realistic solution !! Just to make sure I understand it correctly, instead of the "plates" I should weld a section of square tube on the upright with a threaded boss as I would do with the plates. A locking washer under the bolt head would secure the bolt.
The eye isn't doing very well,I'm not allowed to drive the car and the swell inside the eye doesn't seem to go away.I'm on cortisone right now so that isn't a good sign I guess !! What a stupid 1/20" metal splinter can do !! Take care of your eyes guys cause you only know what you miss when something goes wrong !!! Being careless doesn't save you time in the end !!

A friend donated a leather 13" vintage steering wheel !! I machined the back off the original aluminum boss and drilled out the spline hole to receive the steel Metro splined part. A steel plate will be welded to the Metro boss and the aluminum hub can be bolted onto this. It requires some work but since it didn't cost me anything..... Attachments:

started work on the front suspension.Front upright looks a "bit" rough and bulky.I hope that after cleaning up the welds and a lick of paint it will look a bit more..... The front shock is just for looks,it's from an old bike and way to soft. It looks like the Metro rack needs to be shortened something like an inch or so.I'm reluctant to do this because it needs cutting/grinding/welding to make it half an inch shorter on both sides !! didn't want the rear shock to sit as high as in the Terrapin so changed a few things. Have no clue if it will work that way though. Some additional tubes are still needed (shock mounting etc..). Attachments:

bottom mounting point for the rear shock. A pretty sight is something else I guess but if it's functional it's OK for me. Attachments:
